David Levering Lewis, our anthology’s editor, claims that W.E.B. Du Bois’ The Dark Princess is a feminist novel. In 400-600 words, analyze the novel’s attitudes toward women for yourself. (You may consider Du Bois’ treatment of concepts such as the male gaze, primogeniture, the nuclear family, and the quasi-religious allegory at the novel’s conclusion). Be sure to quote textual evidence to support your analysis. Ultimately, why does it matter for our understanding of the novel? In other words, how does it affect what we see as the novel’s purpose — or what’s at stake if we view it as feminist or not?
