As a coach, you must understand how to modify behavior so that participants will behave in an optimal manner. In this activity, you will identify a behavior you wish to modify and create a program to modify that behavior.
Instructions:
(1) Select a sport or physical activity skill that you wish to modify (e.g., an inappropriate golf swing).
(2) Design a behavioral modification program to modify the behavior of interest.
Using the Leadership Growth Plan II Worksheet, write a Behavior Modification Program addressing the following:
(1) Specify the activity or target skill.
-EXAMPLE: Appropriate jump shot form in basketball.
(2) Define the specific target behaviors that you want to modify.
-EXAMPLE: Square up to the basket. Release the ball at peak height of the jump. Follow through with hand and wrist.
(3) Specify how you will record the behaviors.
-EXAMPLE: Have a manager monitor practice and shots taken during games and record the frequency of target behaviors on all jump shots.
(4) Define what meaningful feedback will be provided.
EXAMPLE: Public Recognition-Award players with best form by posting their names on a bulletin board. Each week, coach provides social reinforcement for good form during practice.
(5) State the outcomes of your program.
EXAMPLE: Improved jump shooting.
(6) In 200 words or more, discuss, summarize, and synthesize the empirical studies from the text that use behavior modification techniques to change behaviors.
