Chapter 3
1. What are some of the major issues concerning multiculturalism? Multicultural and bilingual special education? Assessment? Instruction? How can we tailor our instruction in our classrooms to address these issues?
2. After reading Chapter 3 and based on your experiences in school and society, what are some of the reasons for disproportionality of certain ethnic minorities? In your opinion, what adjustments can schools and society make to mitigate this issue?
Chapter 4
3. The text states the following: “Unfortunately, in practice, parents do not always feel valued in their child’s IEP meeting (Mueller, 2017). They often report that professionals use jargon and don’t take time to seek or to listen to their opinions. And the disconnect between parents and professionals is even more pronounced for families from ethnic minorities. Cultural differences related to such things as parenting expectations, communication styles, and familiarity with the special education system can lead to misunderstandings and feelings of alienation,” (Hallahan, Kauffman, & Pullen , 2015).
As you see, this is a problem in our education system. Complete the two scenarios provided below and discuss how you would involve parents in their child’s education and treatment? Feel free to include personal experiences and how you have navigated challenges. ** In addition, here are some parent resources that may be helpful to include in your response. Please use and cite the text in all your answers and add one extra source-text that is not used in this assignment. Please cite the source.
1. You are a classroom teacher, and you notice that a child is having great difficulty with socialization and controlling his behavior but has exceptional skills in all academic areas, although the child is not completing the work because of his challenges with his behavior. The parents are at a loss for what to do because they continuously get calls from the school to pick up the child because of his behavior; however, the child study team refuses to evaluate the child because of his high academic skills. What would you do and how would you support the family?
2. You are a special education teacher in a resource room. You notice that your student has improved slightly after being in resource room for two years, but is still approximately 1 year below grade level in most academic classes, is having great difficulty socializing with her peers, and occasionally throws tantrums in class, which appears to be due to frustration. You believe that the child needs more time in the resource room with you, but the parents want the child to be placed into an inclusion classroom as they have seen progress. What do you do and how would you support the family?
