In Module 1, we explored two very important concepts for this course: Instruction and
instructional design (ID). We learned about a few instructional design models. The most
common model in instructional design is the ADDIE model, which involves five steps: Analysis,
design, development, implementation, and evaluation. You will learn about the ADDIE model.
In the textbook, you will be introduced to another instructional design model: Dick and Carey
model. You will get an overview of the model and be introduced to the major steps in it. Then
compare the Dick and Carey model with ADDIE: How are they similar? How are they different?
We will be learning the details of the Dick and Carey model throughout the semester.
Module Objectives
So at the end of this module, you will be able to:
 Relate the different steps in the Dick and Carey model to the phases of the ADDIE model
– analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation.
 Describe the tasks associated with each step in the Dick and Carey model and the input
and output materials for each step.
 Name learning theories that form the foundation of the Dick and Carey model.
 Name the basic components of systematically designed instruction. Describe the
characteristics of an instructional designer.
Required Readings
1. Dick, W., Carey, L., & Carey, J.O. (2015) The Systematic Design of Instruction (8th ed.).
Pearson Publishing, Upper Saddle River, NJ. (Chapter 1)
2. Lu, L. Sides, M., & Ogunyemi, O. (2017). Instructional design for effective teaching:
Application of ADDIE model in a developmental reading lesson. Poster presented at the
2017 National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) annual conference,
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Instructional Activities
You will do the following in this module:
1. Read chapter 1 in the textbook. Use the Chapter 1 Pre-instructional and Content
Presentation Materials to help with your understanding.
2. Read the poster, Instructional design for effective teaching: Application of ADDIE model
in a developmental reading lesson. Compare the ADDIE model with the Dick & Carey
model? How are they similar? How are they different?
3. Take the Chapter 1 Quiz. You can take the quiz multiple times to increase your pass rate.
4. Participate in the Module 2 Forum. In this forum, you will begin to think about your
instructional design project. In this semester, you will design a 30-minute instructional
unit for a context of your choice. The ideal is to be able to design a project with other
classmates however, because of the number of students enrolled in the course, you
will be completing your project alone. It is time to think about your project context By
the end of this module, you should have a rough project idea in mind for the project.
