Issues related to slavery were central to the outbreak of the Civil War. When the Civil War finally broke out, what was the Union’s official policy toward the Confederacy and the institution of slavery and what key events led to a reassessment of these policies? President Lincoln often takes center stage in these types of discussions. How did Lincoln use the office of the presidency to strike a blow to the master-enslaved bond and in what ways did the office and Constitution constrain him? As these chapters emphatically demonstrate, African Americans were central participants in the outcome of the war, the destruction of slavery, and during Reconstruction.
