Reading Daer et al.’s short article on the Rhetorical Function of Hashtags.
Select a hashtag on Twitter. Try to find one that speaks to current cultural concerns, but which does not have too many tweets to analyze.
Spend at least 2 days collecting tweets with this hashtag. Check in multiple times a day. Take notes on the tweets you gather. Use screenshots to keep records of the tweets. By the end of this time, you want at least 30 tweets.
Write a 750-word analysis of the hashtag. Include images of tweets as examples in your analysis. In your analysis answer some of the questions below:
What is the context surrounding this hashtag? What is happening to make people interested in this topic?
What do the tweets using the hashtag have in common? Which tweets stand out and why?
Which tweets are getting the most attention, replies, or favorites? Why?
Who seems to be tweeting using this hashtag? What might they being trying to accomplish? What’s their motivation to participate in this stream?
Does the stream seem to get off track? How and why? Once it gets off track, how do others respond?
