After reading the required text and viewing the Videos, please answer the following:
“What were the conditions that led to the creation of jazz in New Orleans? In your opinion, could jazz have formed elsewhere in America? ”

2- Jody: This video I happened to come across. Although the circumstances are horrific as it was filmed in a prison, the video represents what work was like on an oppressive plantation in the south during the birth of America and how workers would use song (the work song) to not only pass the time but to boost morale, resist and communicate. Notice the ensemble “Call and Response”. This musical technique has stayed with us ever since. (Please read more about the “Work Song” and “The Blues” under “week 1”)
3- In addition, you see the work song in modern works. Check these out:
“Warframe” – “We All Lift Together” A student just sent me a link this semester. Disclaimer: I have never heard of this game or artist however, it’s pretty clear the song is based on the “Work Song”
Hey Mama – Nicki Minaj and David Guetta. This song came out a few years ago (explicit lyrics). However, it uses a sample of the work song “Rosie” in the beginning.
